DUBAI RESIDENCE VISA RENEWAL FOR DEPENDENTS: WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW
PHASE 1: BEFORE YOU START – THE 90-DAY PREP WINDOW
START COUNTING FROM EXPIRY, NOT FROM TODAY
Your dependent’s visa expiry date is printed on the Emirates ID and the visa sticker ejari certificate. Mark it on a calendar and subtract 90 days. That’s day one of your renewal window. Missing this date means late fines of AED 25 per day, capped at AED 1,000, plus possible entry bans if the visa lapses.
GATHER THE SPONSOR’S DOCUMENTS FIRST
The parent who sponsors the child must have a valid Emirates ID, labour contract, and salary certificate from the employer. If the sponsor’s visa is expiring within 30 days of the dependent’s, renew the sponsor’s visa first. A sponsor with an expired visa cannot renew dependents, and the entire family could face overstay fines.
CHECK THE CHILD’S PASSPORT VALIDITY
The passport must have at least six months validity from the renewal date. If it expires sooner, book a passport renewal at your consulate immediately. Renewing a passport can take 4-6 weeks, and GDRFA will reject any visa application if the passport is short on validity.
SECURE A CURRENT SALARY CERTIFICATE
The salary certificate must be issued within the last 30 days, printed on company letterhead, and stamped by the employer. Banks and typing centres will not accept older certificates. Without it, the typing centre will refuse to open the file, delaying the process by at least a week.
BOOK A MEDICAL TEST SLOT FOR THE CHILD
Dependents aged 18 and above must complete a medical test at an approved health centre. Slots fill up quickly, especially near school holidays. Skipping this step means the visa cannot be issued, and you’ll pay AED 500 to rebook the test.
PHASE 2: DOCUMENT COLLECTION – THE 30-DAY CHECKLIST
OBTAIN AN ATTESTED BIRTH CERTIFICATE
The birth certificate must be attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and your home country’s embassy in Dubai. If the certificate is in a language other than Arabic or English, get it translated by a legal translator. GDRFA will reject any unauthenticated document, forcing you to restart the process.
GET A NO-OBJECTION CERTIFICATE FROM THE SPONSOR’S EMPLOYER
The NOC must state the sponsor’s job title, salary, and that the company has no objection to sponsoring the dependent. Some free zones require an additional NOC from the free zone authority. Without this, the typing centre will not proceed, and you’ll waste AED 200 on a rejected application.
COLLECT THE CHILD’S ORIGINAL EMIRATES ID
The Emirates ID must be valid or expired for less than 30 days. If it’s lost, report it at an ICA centre and get a replacement. The visa renewal cannot be completed without the Emirates ID number, and you’ll pay AED 300 for a new card.
PHOTOGRAPH THE CHILD AGAINST A WHITE BACKGROUND
The photo must be 4.3 x 5.5 cm, with the child’s face covering 70-80% of the frame. No glasses, no shadows, no digital filters. Typing centres will reject photos that don’t meet ICA standards, adding a 3-day delay while you redo them.
PHASE 3: TYPING AND SUBMISSION – THE 7-DAY COUNTDOWN
CHOOSE AN APPROVED TYPING CENTRE
Only typing centres licensed by GDRFA can process dependent visa renewals. Avoid unlicensed centres; they often make errors that lead to rejections. Check the GDRFA website for a list of approved centres near you.
VERIFY THE APPLICATION FORM BEFORE PAYING
The typing centre will fill out the form based on the documents you provide. Double-check every field: name spelling, passport number, and sponsor details. A single typo can cause a rejection, and you’ll pay AED 100 to correct it.
PAY THE VISA FEE UPFRONT
The fee for a 2-year dependent visa is AED 2,689, including typing, medical, and Emirates ID. Some centres add a service charge of AED 50-100. Paying upfront ensures the file is submitted the same day. If you delay, the centre may prioritise other clients.
SUBMIT THE FILE TO GDRFA
The typing centre will upload the documents to the GDRFA system. You’ll receive an SMS with a reference number. Keep this number; you’ll need it to track the status. If the centre forgets to submit, your file will sit idle, and the visa will expire.
PHASE 4: MEDICAL AND STATUS CHECK – THE 5-DAY WAIT
TRACK THE APPLICATION STATUS DAILY
Use the GDRFA website or the DubaiNow app to check the status. If it says “under process” for more than 3 days, call GDRFA at 800 5111. A stuck application could mean a missing document or a system error, and you’ll need to intervene before the visa expires.
ATTEND THE MEDICAL TEST ON TIME
The child must fast for 12 hours before the blood test. Arrive 15 minutes early with the passport and Emirates ID. If the child eats before the test, the results will be invalid, and you’ll pay AED 500 to retake it.
COLLECT THE MEDICAL RESULTS
Results are usually ready in 24-48 hours. Download them from the health centre’s portal or collect a printed copy. If the results show any issues, consult a doctor immediately. A positive result for infectious diseases will lead to visa rejection.
PHASE 5: FINAL APPROVAL AND COLLECTION – THE LAST 48 HOURS
